Psalm 11: The Shield Against Bad News

Psalm 11 is the antidote for the bad news blues.

In the Lord I take refuge. How can you say to my soul, “Flee like a bird to your mountain, for behold, the wicked bend the blow; they have fitted their arrow to the string to shoot in the dark at the upright in heart; if the foundations are destroyed what can the righteous do?

(Psalms 11:1-3)

Every week when we see the news or look at social media we see something that vexes our souls or makes us angry.

Either Congress is pushing some agenda, local governments are still keeping cities and states in lockdown mode, or you’re just watching the world’s civil liberties dry up more and more.

Keep Psalms 11 in your hearts as we move through the weeks ahead.

Some believe David wrote this psalm during his dealings with Saul. (See 1 Sam. 18.) However, the message behind Psalm 11 is just as applicable to our own circumstances now as it was when it was written.

The LORD tests the righteous, but His soul hates the wicked and the one who loves violence.

Let Him rain coals on the wicked; fire and sulfur and a scorching wind shall be the portion of their cup.

For the Lord is righteous; He loves righteous deeds; the upright shall behold His face.

(Psalms 11:5-7)

Stand firm and be patient.

The Lord is in His holy temple, the Lord’s throne is in heaven; His eyes behold, His eyelids test the sons of men.

(Psalms 11:4)

In the meantime, just keep reading the Book and find comfort in the Word.

The bad news of today is nothing compared to the Good News we know.

I know I will.

I’ve said this before, but one of the tools I use is a chronological reading plan, Through the Bible…As It Happened. It breaks down the Bible into a historical narrative that you can read and experience the Word in chronological order.

I wrote a full review on it if you want to learn more before buying, but I recommend adding it to your toolbox.
